Open the Door to Music at Gateway

The tbjkids June/July issue presented a guide to traveling around China, but for those of us spending most of our time in Beijing this summer, check out the summer program at the Beijing Concert Hall, Gateway to Music.

From July to August, Gateway To Music, is a series of various concerts to introduce kids and families to the world of classical music and stimulate intellects during the lazy days of summer.

Gateway to Music will feature performances by first-class musicians, including violinists Peter Winograd and Sheng Zhongguo, violist Daniel Avshalomov, cellist Wolfram Koessel, and pianist Seta Yuko.

Gear up for Father's Day!

In my household, my father never received an elaborate Father’s Day celebration. We’d usually hunt for the latest gadget to get him, and we often failed. My brothers and I usually ended up giving my father a stunning new tie, but he didn’t seem to really mind. We focused most of our attention on Mother’s Day – showering my mom with flowers and pitching in with household chores. However, ever since my siblings and I left the nest, our gifts to my father have gotten better over the years—but your family doesn’t have to be as uncreative as mine was! tbjkids has compiled a few activities, gift ideas, and imaginative ways to show dads you really care on Sunday, June 15

Summer Sunday Brunch for the Whole Family at J.W. Marriot Hotel

A Summer Sunday Brunch for the Whole Family at J.W. Marriot Hotel

Looking for something to do this weekend? Join the newly opened JW Marriot Hotel  celebrates the beginning of summer at their Asia Bistro with a special family-friendly day this Sunday, June 1!

Family dining can be difficult. Siblings fight over where they want to eat, picky children limit restaurant options and a lack of babysitters makes dining without the kids a difficult affair. Asia Bistro promises to create a restaurant outing that is fun for the whole family.

The Bistro will set up special areas devoted to making sure that children enjoy themselves. Two on-site nannies will keep the kids entertained, as adults enjoy a special Sunday brunch on the outdoor terrace replete with Japanese, Indian, Vietnamese and French cuisine, as well as a Beijng Duck section.

Local Chinese Youth Environmental Project

Students from 40 local schools in Beijing have been working on the “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle” campaign with support from Kimberly-Clark over the past two months. Since we all live in China, and we can tangibly feel how important it is to learn the most we can about protecting the environment and undoing the damage we’ve already inflicted, this is a great way for families and kids to find out about what they can do. The event will also include writing messages of hope and encouragement to those in Sichuan province affected by the earthquake. The event is hosted by Roots and Shoots, a youth program of the Jane Goodall Institute.

Date: June 1

Time: 9am-12 noon

Location: Beijing City International School

Details: In Chinese

Seeing Double

When I see twins in the street—I usually do a double-take, no pun intended. But how about seeing a thousand pairs of them! At the Fourth Mojiang International Twins Festival held during May 1-3, over a thousand pairs of twins from China and overseas gathered in Mojiang County, southwest China’s Yunnan Province to celebrate this special festival for twins.

Hit the slopes with tbjkids

It’s the season for skiing! If the dry weather inside Beijing isn’t satisfying you and your kids’ desire for snow, hit the slopes with tbjkids at Nanshan Ski Resort --- the largest in the area and only 62km from Beijing! 'Tis the Season

It’s around this time of year that thoughts of Christmas begin to invade my head, and I’m looking at this Saturday (December 1) as the unofficial start of the holiday season in Beijing. There’s a confluence of events around town that day that’ll keep you and the kids merry from morning to night.

Start off at 10am by visiting the Rotary Club's Christmas Bazaar at the Hilton Hotel where there will be 30 to 40 tables of vendors selling their wares – a perfect place to shop for holiday gifts.

Kids' Creations at the Kro

It was a full house last Saturday as the Workers Stadium branch of The Kro's Nest played host to the tbjkids Create Your Own Pizza party. Families with kids ranging in age from infants to teenagers each took a hack at making the perfect combo … a tasty time was had by all.

First Prize for not only tastiness but visual appeal went to the Dimsa family, with their "Our House" combo.

Looks almost too good to eat! For their pie-making efforts the Dimsas were rewarded with a voucher for 5 free pizzas at the Kro's Nest -- to enjoy perhaps at times when the Kro is not quite so crowded!
