Is my toddler becoming a 'fraidy cat'?

recently my 18-month old daughter seems to be afraid of just about everything -- dogs, strangers, loud noises, even the odd door shutting can unhinge her and cause her to run to mommy and demand to be held and breastfed.
Hoping this is a phase ... anyone have any suggestions about what I can do or should I just let nature take its course?

My first one did this for a few months around that age and then it passed. My advice would be to give a lot of comfort and cuddling and she'll gradually develop a stronger sense of security. Enjoy it while you can -- in 6-12 months she may refuse to let even Mommy hold her as she asserts her "independence."

Developmental stages or phases, which ever you prefer, are always fun and challenging. The "fraidy-cat" stage is common. You may notice that when she startles there is an initial delay in her response as she looks for you or mom. She is looking for you to learn the appropriate response or coping skill. It's important during these times to consider your reaction.
For example, my daughter would startle easily, which is convenient since we have such noisy neighbors. If she was awake with me, I would laugh in response. If she was sleeping and woke crying, I would allow her to soothe herself. Now she shrugs off the neighbors wrestling matches, the local restaurant's firework celebrations and the construction site. If she is sleeping, she just rolls over and goes back to dreaming.
Of course all babies are individuals, but generally speaking ... "monkey see, monkey do"
