Re: Dehydrated toddler won't drink ... what to do?
well i'll tell you one thing not to do -- wait and see if she gets better. we eventually took her to the emergency room and a blood test indicated she was severely dehydrated and we needed to check her in for an overnight IV drip.
It only took her a day and a half to become critically dehydrated (she's 1-1/2 years old)
parents, don't wait if your kid shows signs ...

Re: Dehydrated toddler won't drink ... what to do?
I hope she's better now. I don't know any worse feeling than being unable to help one of my kids when he or she is sick.
For dehydration, my wife & I always try to start early, pushing fluids constantly as soon as any sickness symptoms start. Two tricks that have worked with our 3 kids are:
1. Give the child a new, attractive cup. If she's not too sick yet, she'll want to use it a lot. Sometimes this will even last for a couple of days.
2. Use a medicine dropper to feed her water "like a baby" or "like a mouse/gerbil." Make a game of it, and maybe she let you get a few droppersful down every 30 minutes or so. We try to pick up some extra droppers each time we visit a pediatrician or pharmacy in the US.
By the way, we've found The Baby Book by Dr. Sears an invaluable reference during those late-night, thousands-of-miles-away-from-a-pediatrician-we-trust situations. Our 11-year-old copy is very well-thumbed. Apparently the husband & wife team have a website now, too. Haven't browsed the website yet myself. http://www.askdrsears.com/html/8/t081300.asp

You can make your own "pedialyte" type rehydrating solution.
1 quart water
3 t sugar (raw unprocessed sugar, like from De Run Wu--like Sucanat-- is best, but barring that, honey, or molasses or maple syrup also beat white sugar in my book)
1t of sea salt
1/2 t baking soda
squeeze of lemon juice or a bit of regular juice for flavor
There are different formulations if you google "homemade pedialyte" infant but this is the basic recipe.

unfortunately during her illness she wouldn't drink anything, and even spoonfuls of juice and/or rehydration fluid was summarily rejected.
she's better now though ... makes you really appreciate good health!
