Getting Rid of Mosquitoes

A friend of mine noticed that the mosquitoes seem to congregate in her bathroom. She thinks maybe they get in through the pipes (the drains here aren’t the curvy drains like we have in the States, so there is no pool of water in the pipes blocking their entrance). We decided to tape over the overflow holes in the sinks, and at night we close the drains. Presto! Hardly any mosquitoes left in our house. Give it a try and see if it works for you. Any other ideas out there for safe ways to rid your home of mosquitoes?

The mosquito nets over our beds are a must-have! You can get them at Kids Plus (in lots of fun colors) in Shunyi's Pinnacle Plaza, or at IKEA for a bit cheaper.

Someone yesterday told me about some plug-in type of apparatus at Carrefour that has pretty much zapped their mosquito issues.

IQ air is advertising some high-powered device for outdoor areas that seems like it has to kill 'em, but I don't know the cost.

I am a fervent hater of these pests, so any other advice about ridding our lives of them here in Beijing is highly welcome!

Re: Getting Rid of Mosquitoes

That's really interesting you say that.

I am at Capital Paradise, and our mosquito problem is rather extreme. Some friends of mine also suggested that the mosquito's get in through the drains in the sink.

I had never heard of that, so did a reasonably extensive internet search to see if it was possible. I couldn't find anything saying it was-though equally couldn't find anything saying it wasn't.

From what I read though, I wouldn't say they are getting in through the pipes, but that they lay their eggs in their and then that's where they hatch out.

I agree, they seem to be more often found in the bathrooms, although that could equally be because they can smell the water, and they are looking for a place to lay their eggs-what a disgusting thought!

We are getting new mosquito nets on Tuesday for all our windows-if we are still getting the midnight visitors, maybe I will give your idea a spin and see what happens

Re: Getting Rid of Mosquitoes

The plug in mosquito killers are miraculous. The have a little bottle of mosquito repellant in them and the scent is subtle. The effect is instantaneous!

Here on Hainan we have, mainly for entertainment purposes, tennis-racket-shaped bug zappers. They are re-chargeable and emit the most SATISFYING zzzzaaaaaaapppp when contact is made with a mosquito!!
