The restaurants listed below all have play areas ... for a really nice one (staffed by Ayis) head to the Westin Senses; Peter's Tex-Mex and Annie's have small ones but can be grimy at times; Rumi's is really nice, as is Cafe Lakeside if you are out in Shunyi (it has both indoor and outdoor play areas)

I was just at Blue Frog in Europlaza in Shunyi. They have a nice play area, with tables and chairs for little ones and one whole wall that is a chalkboard for drawing. The kids loved it. Also, it was staffed by very nice, attentive folks, so my husband and I actually got to sit and enjoy our meal. Food was pricey, but good. And a very extensive kids' menu.

restaurant with a good play area?

having an almost 2-year-old means that restaurant play areas are a must.
Probably the best I've seen is the Cafe Lakeside one ... but a little too far away for my tastes.

Well, there's always Annie's by Chaoyang Park, and the one in Rumi in Sanlitun looks like it'd be good fun for little ones.
