Looking for Summer School or Summer Camp

Hi, I’m living in Beijing from 8 months. In august 2008 my son (11 years old) will move to me for 1 month. I’m looking for good level Summer School or Summer Camp for him. Maybe in someone of the Int’l schools in Beijing? I’m working from 9:00 to 17:00 as journalist. I would like that he spend this time with kids on his age or approximately, to learn, to sport, to experience his English, to lose energy and to find friends. To the moment all offers are for july. I need info for august. I would greatly appreciated any suggestions

Re: Looking for Summer School or Summer Camp

hi!

i think i've found a summer camp that runs through August!

check out the ACLS Beijing Summer Camp at: http://www.acls.com.cn/summer_camp.asp

Runs from Jul 14 to Aug 23. For two age groups: 6-11 year olds and 12 to 17 year olds. Camp is held in the Lido Area, very close by to the Lido Holiday Inn.

Also, I rang up earlier this week and they said that they had an early bird deal for parents who sign up before July. Great news for us parents!

hope that helps! : ) Pat

Re: Looking for Summer School or Summer Camp

Hi,

I just joined this group and found this on the top of the comments list and it really is timely.

I am an artist based in San Francisco and I will be establishing a studio in Caochangdi area this summer. I have an 8-year-old daughter and I'd like to bring her with me for the summer. I am looking for a summer camp near the Caochangdi area. This Camp sounds great for its location. My concern is though that, it sounds like the program is very much focused on teaching the kids Chinese. My daughter has been going to Sunday Chinese School for a semester now and she absolutely hates it because she's behind on her Chinese (she's doing great in her regular school.) While I would love for my daughter to learn more Chinese (she doesn't speak Chinese although she does understand some, and I am Chinese in origin), I am afraid that she'll find herself in another academic environment that she doesn't enjoy. Or am I misreading their program?

I also called the LearningCenter and their summer program is even more academic and they're out in the burb in Shunyi. Do anybody know of other summer camps in the City that are designed around activities like art, music, science, Chinese learning, fieldtrips etc? The timeframe I'm looking is from June to end of August. I would appreciate any insight on this. Thanks.

Re: Looking for Summer School or Summer Camp

I share your concern, because as much as I would like my kids to improve their Chinese, I'd like them to enjoy their summer holidays too and not get too tied down with class work. I contacted ACLS and found out that they are planning to run Chinese classes for 3 hours in the mornings - 9am to 12pm. The rest of the afternoon, the kids will spend outside the classroom having lunch, playing sports, doing cultural activities and going on fieldtrips. What do you think? I think 3 hours is a good amount of time. Not too heavy so that they don't get stressed out and not too light so that they get time to actually learn something. Also judging by the photos on their website, the kids look like their kept busy with a lot of extracurricular activities: http://www.acls.com.cn/summer_camp_photos.asp

hope that helps.

Re: Looking for Summer School or Summer Camp

Hello Pat,

Thanks for the info. That really helps. And 3 hours of class in the morning sounds just right to me, especially if they are balanced out with the rest of the fun activities in the afternoon. I am almost sure my daughter will enjoy it.

I also found another summer camp called Camp Adventure organized at the Beijing City International School. (Have you heard of that one?) Theirs is purely a fun oriented summer camp and is actually lower on my list compared to this one. But since this one starts in mid-july, theirs starts in june and runs through the whole summer, I might be taking theirs for the first part and then switch over to this one.

Thanks again. Best regards,

michael
