Western vs Chinese potty training

Just on this Chinese no-nappy thing again - I know some Westerners who are starting to adopt this idea (with ayi's help!); although I'm sure they're not crapping in the street per se, just embracing the whole idea of holding baby over toilet when they're home, getting to know baby's toileting rhythms, etc. Does ANYONE honestly think the Chinese toilet-training way is the BETTER way? If so - WHY? Just interested...

No, because it makes it too easy for the kids to pee all over the entrances to buildings and other places where people can tread in it while walking it into their homes or offices.

Babies are babies but young kids that can understand what is being said to them should be encouraged to find a private place....imo.

Re: Western vs Chinese potty training

Generation after generation has been taught the method the western way. It works if you train them early. Just look at the streets of London, Los Angeles, Boston, Vancouver, Houston for proof. My boy had this little potty situated in the bookroom. He'd run there himself after a few times and sit down next to his lego toys. Somewhere between creating a house from the blocks, off he goes.

Re: Western vs Chinese potty training

Actually its quite effective although not that hygeinic, but as compared to my students who started wearing the split shorts when they were around 16 months old, by the time they reach 20 to 22 months they can already tell when they want to pee or poop or give some signs atleast 2 to 3 minutes before it happens which is enough to run to the bathroom as compared to those kids who wears diapers most of them started to do the same behavior around 24 months up.

I think u could let the kid wear the split pants at home but not every where for hygeinic reasons. But at home u can do that actually if ur toilet training ur kid the less clothes the better even naked is better specially with this hot weather. And make sure to give positive reinforcements whenever a successful excretion is made. Which ever method u use make sure to read ur little ones cues and record it to have a basic idea which time of the day he does his thing. One sign that shows he is ready for training includes hiding or choosing a place to do it like at the back of the sofa or in his room. Good luck!!!!

Re: Western vs Chinese potty training

I remember my Mandarin tutor telling us that she would let her daughter wee and poop all over the floor of their house, and just clean it up as they went. I mean, I don't mind the odd accident - but is it really that necessary/hygenic? I can't bear it!! I heard that Chinese babies are held in a way that announces to them "wee/poo now" every x amount of hours per day until they get the message that it's now time to do it. Is this right? And if so, why can't they take them to a toilet instead of in the middle of the footpath????

that is what you do to teach a dog to learn to go to the correct place. Chinese children or any child are not dogs.

Re: Western vs Chinese potty training

my $.02:

-allowing a kid to just go to the bathroom in their pants whenever they feel like it is not teaching them anything. (if they don't wear a diaper, they need to learn much faster to hold it in till the right time.)

-diapers are really wasteful, and now diaper companies are marketing in China. Does China need more trash? (or does the world, for that matter?)

no. when a dog shits in the house you smack it lightly on the nose w/ rolled up newspaper, rub its nose in it briefly, and take it outside to show it where it should go. you don't know much, do you?

That is the abusive method and the one that gives fathers and mothers a bad name. Then there is the method that you put papers down everywhere and let the dog go where it wishes as long as it is on the paper leading to the door so they learn to go outside. I can see the Chinese child shitting and pissing on the paper until it leads to the bathroom. Just like a dog. God you must be an abusive individual. I would never wish to be in your family.
