Chinese citizenship for babies born to foreigners?

Hello,
I will be giving birth here in Beijing and have been asked many times by people at home whether this means the baby will acquire Chinese citizenship in the process. I don't think so - but can anyone confirm / deny this?
Thanks for your responses,

Re: Chinese citizenship for babies born to foreigners?
It depends what country you want to hold nationality in and whether that other nation wants your baby or not. Some places don't offer dual nationality. You may or may not have a choice.

You baby can autimaticlly gain Chiense citizenship if she/he is born here, but you have to give up anyother nationality that she/he might get, because China doesn't admit dual citizenship.

I have heard that if your baby is born here it is born Chinese national, and your home country while they can povide you with citizenship will not offer you a birth certificate, which later would make things very complex for documentaiton. In some cases you will have a choice what citizenship you wish to take on, it is unlikely though that you can obtain dual citizenshoip because the last tim eI checked China does not offer thta option, you are either Chinese, or you are not. Personally I would seriously consider the benefits later in life your child will enjoy from having a first world birth certificate - it may make things much better for them.
If I have a kid I intend to fly back to Canada with my future wife to have it
For now though, go have a talk with your embassy about the policy, and don;t rely on a phone call, they can and sometimes do tell you anything over the phone. Good luck,

An english language birth certificate can be issued by the chinese hospitals and then that certificate can be taken to your Embassy to file for a passport and a live birth registration providing citizenship to the child. As both the USA and China do not recognize dual citizenship, it is possible that these rules could change and apparently once the passports have been issued one can then proceed to check on some of the advantages of being born to a chinese citizen such as medical etc.
